All printers need to be calibrated to keep up with accuracy.  Calibration is about controlling
the variables.  You will either have issues with timing due to changes in print heads or issues
with media.  Schedule an onsite visit to control the quality of your output to your customers.
Most inkjet printers jet ink in both directions of travel.
The encoder strip helps the printer know when and where
to jet that droplet of ink.  This is an important
calibration because it controls the quality and speed
of your final output.
Based on the various types of media out there, it is
important to know how to adjust the calibration so that
the passes of ink line up with each other.  The printer
can be calibrated very accurately for this.  These
calibrations are taught as well once on site.
